Coronavirus spread still high in Sauk County

Community spread for COVID-19 remains in the red for Sauk County.

According to the latest Health Department data, there were 229 new confirmed cases between Oct. 5 and 11. Eight people were hospitalized in that timeframe. Overall, 335 residents had symptoms or the onset of symptoms.

There were no deaths in the latest timeframe.

Equity Cooperative offers scholarships

Equity Cooperative Livestock Sales Association will award 10 $1,250 scholarships for college students and two $1,000 scholarships for students pursuing technical degrees or short courses.

Scholarships will be given for the 2022 academic year.

Book talk haunts Wonewoc library

The Wonewoc Public Library will host a presentation about the town of Baraboo’s haunted history.

It will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18.

Local authors Shelley Mordini and Gwen Herrewig will discuss their new book, “Haunted Baraboo.”

Naturally Speaking: Autumn ivy

Autumn ivy, as with all the other growth forms of poison ivy, is still “poisonous.” The leaves on the vine form are becoming weathered and worn, tattered and torn, and just plain old this deciduous plant, which is its way of saying autumn’s beginning. The leaflets of the plant’s trifoliate leaves are still there to cause discomfort to some.

Autumn color is just starting in Sauk County, according to the state’s Fall Color Report.

According to the report, most of Sauk County is at 20 percent of its peak color, meaning the best shades will be showing up later this month. Predictions say that’s likely to be the second or third week of October.

Cooperative accepts internship applications

CentralStar Cooperative is looking for agriculture students who’d be interested in filling paid internships next summer.

There will be nine opportunities: Two in milk and diagnostic testing, one in research and development and six in artificial insemination.
