Wisconsin’s nine-day gun-deer season runs Nov. 18-26.

DNR statistics show that Sauk County’s herd has been growing steadily since 2012 in forests. Since then, the deer population has risen from an estimated 18,700 to 34,400. Current prognostics show the herd could max out at 35,000 this year, despite hunting.

Naturally speaking: Deer hunting responsibilities

Wisconsin’s deer season opens Nov. 18 about 6:30 a.m., depending on where a hunter is standing ready.

Before that time, as the light begins to appear, there is time to think, as well as look at shadows too dark to fully identify.

Some of those thoughts might bump into hunter responsibilities.

Four ways to help birds this fall

The leaves and brown stalks in our yards are a sure sign of fall and a savior for Wisconsin’s resident birds.

Rethinking traditional fall yard care can help our feathered friends and let us enjoy more of the season.

Naturally Speaking: All about autumn

Autumn. (Photo by Jerry Davis)

Autumn is approaching; is here; and is leaving all at the same time. Fall is detected in the smell of decomposing leaves, by the sight of colored fruits, felt in the texture of chestnut burs, heard in the sounds of wind whistling through pine needles, and tasted in pumpkins grown during summer.
