Straight-line winds batter Sauk Prairie


The venerable and historic Bonham Theater in downtown Prairie du Sac suffered damage to its marquee from the straight-line winds April 14. Built around 1922 during the American boom in movie houses, it was designed to accommodate silent films and vaudeville acts. Featuring architectural elements of the Jazz Age, the building represents the transition from grand opera houses to dedicated movie theaters. It has also served as a community center for Sauk Prairie through the years. (Photo by Joe Block)

It was still near 70 degrees in the early morning hours of April 14, as an unseasonably warm and moist air mass remained in place over Sauk Prairie. Normal lows for that time of year are in the 30s. The heat and the moisture in the air set the stage for a night of severe weather.
