Next week is a busy one at Reedsburg Public Library. Youth services programs get underway after their spring break hiatus, the adult morning and evening book discussions meet for their postponed March program, and Reedsburg Public Library hosts a unique event.
On Saturday, April 5, Reedsburg Public Library will host Wisconsin typewriter collector and enthusiast Bob Walker for a “Type In” for all ages in the RPL Community Room from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. At the session Walker will introduce his typewriter collection, which includes one machine from every decade from the 1880’s to the 2000’s. After the brief presentation, participants may enjoy typing, either on their own personal machines they have brought with them, or one of Walker’s prototypes.
Walker remarks that Type-Ins are fun for all ages. Older attendees can reacquaint themselves with the joy of typing and memories of typewriters of the past, while youth can enjoy a new experience! It may be a fun event for grandparents and grandchildren to do together. One might think that Walker’s passion is a one in a million avocation, but he notes that there are several Facebook and other social media groups for typewriter enthusiasts. The largest, Antique Typewriter Collectors, has over 33,000 members. Check out the typewriter display in the library’s entry, as well as our book display which features Walker’s own fiction title “Typewriter Block,” which can be purchased at the Type-In event.
On Monday, March 31, at 2 p.m. Assistant Library Director Caitlin Opatik hosts her “Tech Days” in the Library’s Community Room. The session for March will be a “drop-in-day” where those who have questions about the use of the LINKcat App or the Libby App may bring their device in for troubleshooting.
On Tuesday, April 1, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Reedsburg Public Library’s morning and evening book discussion groups will focus on Ariel Lawhon’s 2023 book, “Frozen River.” The novel, based on historical events, follows the activities of 1789 Maine midwife Martha Ballard, as she investigates a small-town murder. Little does she know that her midwife’s journal will become evidence in the trial. New members are always welcome to join the book club. The group normally meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. either in person or via Zoom. The next selection, “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo,” will be discussed on April 22.
Watch for next week’s article about the “Historical First Impressions” presentation of “Women Who Dared” on Monday, April 14, at 6 p.m. in the library’s Community Room.
