As spring break approaches you may wonder what kind of day trip or short getaway you might plan nearby, or perhaps you are looking ahead to a more distant summer excursion! Either way, Reedsburg Public Library has materials to help you plan your vacation!
RPL staff continually updates both foreign and domestic guidebooks with the goal of having no guide older than three years. Although there are some older pictorial and “coffee table” type books interspersed with these guidebooks that are retained for their timeless photographs, every effort is made to supply travelers with up-to- date information on tourist attractions, restaurants and accommodations.
For a day trip close at hand, the call number for Wisconsin travel is 917.75. Here, you will find recent acquisitions such as Great Nature Wisconsin, Moon’s Wisconsin Travel Guide, Wisconsin Harbor Towns, Small Town Wisconsin, and James Buchholz’s Wisconsin State Parks, Forests and Recreation Areas.
Adjacent to Wisconsin guidebooks are travel resources for our neighbors Minnesota, Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, among other guidebooks to the rest of the fifty states.
Hikers should note that several volumes of the Falcon guides to hiking trails in Wisconsin and other states are located in the call number 796.51. Guides to canoeing and kayaking routes can be found down the shelf in the call number 797.
If you are planning a summer jaunt across the pond, the travel guides populating call number 914 through 916 should assist you in your plans. Library acquisitions from publishers Fodors, Frommers, Moon, Lonely Planet and Rick Steves will give you up to date advice and help you make arrangements. DK Eyewitness and Insight travel guides feature especially beautiful color photographs of destinations.
Films for the prospective or “armchair” traveler can be found in the 914 to 919 section of the nonfiction DVDs. The entire “Discover Wisconsin” travel collection is available for day trippers, while a number of series including “Rick Steves” cover other national and international destinations.
A foreign trip may require a brush up on your language skills. Check the call numbers beginning with 430 in the library’s nonfiction. These books often contain CDs or free websites to access for language practice. RPL also subscribes to the online resource “Transparent Languages,” which can be found under the “Research Resources” tab on the library’s website www.reedsburglibrary.org. Enter your library card number here and set up a password to begin free lessons in any of 120 different languages.
Finally, if you are not finding the language or travel materials you are looking for, be sure to ask library staff for assistance. Books and audiovisual titles can be requested from other libraries in the South Central Library System. Also, if you have not done so already, get your free Wisconsin State Park day pass at the library’s main desk.
